Civic Architecture : Sacred Building
Vicenza Cathedral (Dome and Side Portal)
Begun in 1482, work on the Vicenza Cathedral was soon halted until 1557, when enough funds were finally made available to the project. At this juncture, Palladio took over, drafting an overall design for the building and, in 1566, constructing its dome. The Vicenza Cathedral exhibits the characteristic form of a lantern; it is curiously abstract and has limited decoration.
