Year of Palladio

Ponte Coperto (Covered Bridge)

When planning Vicenza’s Ponte Coperto in 1569, Palladio originally wanted a bridge with three stone arches like those on the ancient Roman bridges, but this idea was rejected as the City Council wanted the new bridge to closely mimic the old one, which had collapsed two years before. Palladio’s final plan for the bridge was “radically innovative in terms of technical and static solutions” and lasted for almost 200 years. (Beltramini, p. 197)
